Is it a font? Is it a typeface? The classic designer’s semantic conundrum is cunningly resolved by Spanish design firm Atipo. LOVE this poster series called fontface.

I’ve totally got this year’s Halloween costume down! Caslon Italic (but an F instead of a T).

There are tons of places all over the inter-web where one can go for visual inspiration. Need a good idea for colour combos? Try Kuler. Looking for some inspiration for that next logo design? LogoPond is a good place to start. But when it comes to type, it’s a little harder. Yep, you can look at type specimens from the foundries and type-buying sites, but sometimes that doesn’t cut it. You need to see the type in application, you know what I mean?

Well, good news. Check out Fonts in Use.

That’s right. Type at work in real world applications. I swoon! And I double swoon because the home page features a project set in Chapparal, one of my personal faves.

Type Thursday: let’s take a Ryde

It can be challenging to find a casual sans serif that feels fresh without feeling childish (Comic Sans, I’m looking at you). That’s why I am quite taken with St Ryde, a new typeface from German type foundry Stereotypes. A little bit curvy, a little bit rounded, but still sophisticated enough for professional use.

St Ryde is available in five weights (with true italics for each weight too!) from MyFonts.com. The regular weight is free — that’s right, free… only fueling my desire for the remaining nine fonts. They’re definitely on my wish list!

Do you love the Hipstamatic app? I do. And I also love typography. So it’s no coincidence that I’m completely smitten with Jason Hill’s hipstamatic-shot type poster.

It’s designed by Studio 3, a group of 15 third year graphic design students at Westerdals School of Communication in Oslo, Norway. Here’s a peek at the witty, playful goodness that’s inside.
