I saw this advertisement over on the font feed and just had to share… laces tied in the letter forms of the company word mark.

can you imagine how long it took the stylist to get those laces tied just right? i prefer to think no photoshopping was involved (i’m naive that way)…
take note: these dishes would be a fab addition to any design studio’s kitchenette…

it’s the memo line from fishs eddy.
seriously, could a guy get more romantic than this? compiling the email love notes between his girlfriend and himself to present to her as part of his proposal?

it was designed and produced by studio on fire, so of course it’s the height of gorgeossity. see more here.
when i’m trying to work out a new idea, i often go looking on the interweb for inspiration. it’s not about looking at other designers’ work and copying. in fact, i rarely go to places like logopond. it’s more about looking at other designers’ processes and learning from them. thus my obsession with folks like frank chimero.
imagine my delight, then, to learn that rockport publishers is bringing out a new title called “sketchbook: conceptual drawings from the world’s most influential designers,” edited by timothy o’donnell. oh, i’m in heaven! at least i will be when i get my hot little hands on this book!

timothy o’donnell is currently the design director for johnson & johnson’s global strategic design office… there was a great feature on the innovation going on in that office in ID magazine last april.
this laptop case from rainer spehl is pretty darn sweet! a soft leather lining babies your machine, while a magnetic device keeps it secure (even when the case is turned upside down).

at 220 euros/ 350 CDN, it’s a little pricey… but hey, we all have to do our part to help the ailing global economy, right?

grain edit has a super interview with frank chimero over on their blog.
each time i see frank’s work, or read an interview with him, i just become more smitten. not only is he wise [commenting on his biggest influence, alan fletcher, author of "the art of looking sideways"]:
I’m not sure I can really explain it to the full extent that I felt it, but I connected with that book and it’s content. Here was a book about design that wasn’t about design at all. It was more than that. It was about visually experiencing things, a life style. People had been selling me the idea that design was a lifestyle, and it just seemed snooty and stuffy to me. Just a bunch of people that took themselves too seriously in turtlenecks with lattes rambling on about the virtues of semantics. But Fletcher was different. His work is about curiosity and happiness, wit and innocence. It’s amazing. Through his work, I got a slight glimpse of what I wanted to do with this design thingie, even though I don’t think I fully understood it at the time. I wanted to be curious and let as many things and experiences in me as I could. Then, let them become a vital part of me and share the results of that with everyone else. I knew that’d make me happy, and on a hunch, I hoped (and still hope) it makes other people happy.
he also has a wicked sense of humour! [when asked to describe a typical day-in-the-life of]:
Wake up. Levitate to shower. Apply sunscreen. Weave friendship bracelets. Continue work on my popsicle stick suspension bridge. Air guitar solo. Check email and respond accordingly. Watch RoboCop 2. Draw something or two. Check email again. Cash checks. Go to bed.
i’ve always appreciated frank’s willingness to be open about his design process, and he summarizes that process in this interview:
It’s pretty defined. The specifics change, but the general process for illustrations is: Research > Brainstorming > Freak Out > Sketch > Approval > Render Final.
anyway, there’s tons more great stuff in the interview, so please, go check it out for yerself.
oh, and he lives in missouri! i have recently discovered that the most awesome people live in missouri. are all of you so cool? is it something in the water?
