be the panda

i have always wanted to be the kind of person who keeps a journal. i’ve tried (many times). and i’ve stopped (many times). and i finally decided that i’m too self-conscious to keep a journal and have it not be filled with a bunch of self-conscious writing.

that is why i was delighted to discover keel’s simple diary (at my favourite store in practically the whole world… paper-ya on granville island).

(i’m lime green.)

phillip keel makes diary-keeping… simple. he really does. each day you are asked a series of simple questions that give you an opportunity to reflect on your day… but also on some bigger issues. some make you think. some make you laugh. and after two week of filling in my pages, i’m so glad i’ve started!

this is a new habit i think i’ll be able to keep.

oh, and why “be the panda”? read keel’s philosophy here.

now, aren’t these business cards clever?

the royal chains business cards

what a great way to show band member solidarity! and save money at the same time. this would be a great business card solution for a [ really ] small business, too.

via the designed. sorry, no design credit given. if you know, let me know, and i’ll let the rest of you know!

my adventures in letterpress: 10 easy steps

Monday, January 25th, 2010

for the past 3 weeks i’ve been taking a lettepress course at Emily Carr University of Art & Design. i love it… but let me tell you. setting 8 pt Futura type was finicky. last saturday i decided to take a break from setting tiny type and had some fun with wood type, instead.

LOVE this quote from fran leibowitz…

… people are consistently told “What can you learn about your own life from this novel, what lessons will this teach you? How can you use this…” This is a philistine idea. This is beyond vulgar. It’s an awful way to approach anything. It should take you away. A book should not be a mirror, it’s supposed to be a door.

more fun than shooting ducks in a barrel

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

for the past week or so i’ve been buried up to my neck in a special Olympics issue of the magazine i design. this morning i found myself with a short breather and sadly, i spent most of my time shooting fonts online. the good news? i made it into the daily top 10 scores (oh yeah! those two Michelle scores are mine). the bad news? i still haven’t eaten breakfast!

play here. but i warn you, its addictive.

today i’m loving: friday edition

Friday, January 15th, 2010

i have completed the first class of a four-week letterpress introduction and let me tell ya, i will never raise my eyebrows at a letterpress print quote again. we’re not going to talk about how long it took me to set four lines of type in 8 pt futura. a labour of love, folks… a labour of love.

tomorrow i plan to do a wood type print, and that’s why today i’m loving this wood type laptop skin from schtickers.

the present is a gift

eric smith was diagnosed with cancer, and it changed his life. live now is a project he initiated that has grown into a substantive collaboration consisting of a growing collection of artwork, thoughts, experiences and ideas that you can see here.

one of the reasons i get such satisfaction from communication design is that, when it’s good, design can really reach people. it can change behaviour. it can motivate. it can inspire. that’s why i love live now. sure, some of the illustrations are truisms… but hey, they’re called “true”-isms for a reason, folks. because they’re based on truth.

i’m trying to make 2010 my year of “why not?” if i can dream it up, i can make it happen, right? why not?

starting the 2010 xmas gift list early

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

if i were terribly organized (which if i’m being honest, i’m not) i would immediately purchase this print for the hubster (who is a huge cycling fan) to put under the 2010 xmas tree.

but all is not lost. because i am semi-organized, i have made a note to purchase it at a later date.

print featuring 1988 giro d’italia winner andy hampsten available here at house industries. isn’t it amazing how much energy can be expressed using just black, white and red? and a killer illustration, of course.

i’m gonna need an H&FJ gift certificate post-haste

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

see, here’s the thing. i already adore gotham and secretly (and sometimes not so secretly) try to get all my clients to use it just so i can use it to my heart’s content. and archer? don’t get me started on archer. lurve it. oh right, and i also adore knockout. and sentinel. and now h&fj has hit it out of the park again with vitesse.

i’m not gonna lie. i have a thing for slab serifs. i think it’s because i’m such a fan of straight lines in general. so all those extra little slab thingies just make my heart smile.

i don’t have an issue with paying for type because in a world in which you pretty much get what you pay for you get ALOT when you pay for an h&fj typeface. thus i will start saving my pennies so i can buy vitesse quickly (see that word association thing i just did there? clever.).
